In the aftermath of the Abyss's rise, the southern part of the Land of Dawn has become a barren wasteland, plagued by monsters and devoid of life. The towering Lantis Mountain range provides some protection against the Abyss's corruption, but the natural world in the southern realm continues to wither away. The region, once prosperous, is now known as the Despair Place, a silent, death-filled expanse.
The only passage connecting the Crack of the Abyss with the Moniyan Empire was broken, leaving refugees and wanderers trapped and cut off from the rest of the world. They are haunted by monsters and struggle to survive in fear and despair. However, the name of Benedetta brings hope and a sense of security to these people.
Benedetta, a courageous and persevering female ranger, leads a team that fights in the Lantis Mountain region, protecting scattered settlements established by the last survivors of Despair Place. It has been four years since Benedetta and her team began their campaign in the region.
Armed with Alecto, a long sharpened sword infused with unstoppable power, Benedetta scatters rampaging monsters in fear whenever she draws it. The people of the southern regions have dubbed her the Shadow Ranger and the Protector of the Despair Place. She has earned the admiration and respect of everyone in the wasteland, but the distant Moniyan Empire has left a deep scar in Benedetta's heart, one that can never heal.
Benedetta was not the only victim of the war that took place years ago. Alucard also had his life changed by the war, but his family was different from Benedetta's. Her father was just an ordinary soldier, and unfortunately, the second division of the Imperial Army was convicted of rebellion after being defeated in battle. Consequently, no honour or glory was given to the soldiers who had dedicated their lives to the country. Alucard, as an officer's child, was sent to the Monastery of Light along with several other children and grew up with the blessing of Light.
